Roll-to-Roll Coating Process Engineer

Are you a roll-to-roll process expert with the ambition and ability to bring innovative technology to industrial manufacturing scale in a start-up setting, then we would like to get in contact with you. The Solar Research group of TNO in Eindhoven consists of a diverse and international team of about 50 professionals. Your role will be to move the technology from lab to fab. You’ll be using excellent technical facilities, ranging from research tooling to sheet-to-sheet and roll-to-roll processing equipment, including pilot production lines.

With your team members you’ll be constantly pushing the barriers, balancing energy efficiency of the devices, their reliability, safety and lifetime and the scalability in production, resulting in a competitive cost price. Naturally this is based on a circular product design, eliminating the waste of materials at end-of-life. This entails new solar cell design for single junction and multi-junction all-perovskite solar devices, new process and equipment development, reliability and lifetime testing, prototyping, field testing, development of advanced characterization and performance models.

Large area deposition techniques are needed to make perovskite solar cells an industrially relevant technology. As an expert on roll-to-roll wet coating, you will be responsible for the roll-to-roll slot die coating depositions. You are familiar with developing suitable inks, understand wetting behaviour and work with complex equipment in a cleanroom environment.

You understand how process parameters are correlated to material properties and how these determine the device performance. With this knowledge you support the team. You are familiar with the complexity of scaling laboratory processes and process tools to a reliable, high throughput, industrial process line.

You will be involved in defining the next generation process equipment. You follow the state-of-the-art of perovskite solar cells as well as the latest developments in the deposition technology via scientific literature, conferences, patents and your own network. Next to manufacturing the solar cells you’ll be closely involved in characterizing them and investigating their durability in accelerated lifetime tests.

You will work in a highly dynamic, interdependent team, organizing your own project, giving it direction, and delivering results. Together with your team members you work on one common goal, to move perovskite solar cells to the forefront of next generation photovoltaics, made here. You will work in a very diverse, international team with knowledge and know-how from a wide range of backgrounds.

• Hold a degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Chemistry, or a related field.
• Have at least 3 years of experience in process development within an R&D environment.
• Possess a strong hands-on background and extensive experience with scalable wet chemical coating processes.
• Are comfortable working with complex process equipment and planning advanced experiments.
• Be eager to identify process-property relations and understand how these changes may impact the solar cell performance and the yield of the production process.
• Have mature skills in planning your work and reporting on the progress.
• Are a collaborative team player who enjoys contributing to shared goals in an international industrial environment.
• Have an entrepreneurial mindset.
